Abstract

Violence against women is partly a result of a well-established ideology that consider men to be superior to women. Much of gender violence is regarded as a normal thing and sometimes used as social sanction. The present study is a linguistic analysis study that tackles the problem of male violence against female partners in an Indian novel The Inheritance of Loss. The analysis adopts Fairclough (2003) Three-Dimensional Model of critical discourse analysis to highlight the entrenched violence and discrimination against women in India. Accordingly, chosen samples are examined in terms of lexical and discourse features, mainly cohesion and coherence. This includes analysis of some rhetorical devices mainly: metaphors and similes. The aim of the study is to show how the author deployed language to convey her ideology. Consequently, the results of this study assert that the author’s tactics help to shed light on the theme of gender inequality. Therefore, this will help working on solving this social phenomenon.
