Abstract

This research paper highlights the role played by "Philosophy in Science" in developing the relationship between "philosophy" and "science". It aims to elucidate this relationship, which has recently evolved into a collaborative effort in the production of scientific knowledge. This collaboration has been framed by a recent trend in "Philosophy of Science," proposed by its proponents as PinS, an abbreviation for Philosophy in Science, distinguishing philosophers of science who produce philosophy (about) science from those who produce philosophy (in) science. To understand the nature of this recent trend, the paper employs an analytical approach, which includes a historical analysis of the problematic relationship between "philosophy" and "science," the emergence of "Philosophy of Science," and the various roles it has increasingly played in strengthening this relationship. PinS introduces a new role for the philosopher of science. This methodological approach highlights differences between PinS and emerging trends in "Philosophy of Science," such as "Philosophy of Science in Practice" (PSP). It clarifies the stages PinS proponents have identified to define their philosophy and research papers using "citation analysis." This approach offers insights into models of PinS philosophers who engage partially in science, expressing their full engagement in this direction. The paper emphasizes the role of philosophers of science in producing scientific knowledge, thereby restoring philosophy's significance and highlighting its importance to contemporary science. The primary recommendation of this paper is to widely introduce and encourage researchers to explore more philosophers of science who represent this direction.
