Abstract
Through a novel set in the royal era, the Egyptian writer tells us about a turbulent period of his childhood at the end of the forties in Cairo. Aspects of this Egypt appear throughout the pages and form a historical background.Sonallah Ibrahim is an Egyptian writer, born in 1937 to a middle-class family in Cairo. In the fifties, he stopped his university studies to devote himself to the political struggle within the Egyptian Communist Party. He was arrested on January 1, 1959, along with a few hundred other activists, and was not released until April 1964. During these years that he spent in prison, he decided to become a writer, taking his first steps by writing his first novel, “That Smell,” which was subject to censorship when it was first published in 1966, immediately placing him among the new avant-garde of the sixties. He completed his second novel during his stay in East Berlin and then moved to Moscow. It was called “August Star,” published in Damascus in 1974. He returned to Cairo in 1974 and decided to devote himself exclusively to writing. Since then, he has published seven other novels, all of which have been translated. Almost into French, including 1992's Years of Sam, a biting satirical novel about the political, social and moral decline of Egypt during the Mubarak era.
