Abstract

This research addresses the life of the Shafi’i historian Faqih, Abu Shama (599 AH/1202 AD - 665 AH/1267 AD). This grammarian and Hadith Teller was born and raised in Damascus in a family who took great interest in education. His origins were in the Holy City of Jerusalem. He found source of writing in his father and grandfather. Abu Shama excelled in Holy Quran memorization at early age. He was taught by Sheikhs in Damascus and abroad, throughout his trips to the Holy City of Jerusalem, to Egypt and to Hajj. They included Sheikh al-Sakhawi (Deceased in 643 AH/1226 AD), Sheikh Ibn Assaker (Deceased in 620 H/1223 AD), and Judge Ibn Chaddad (Deceased in 632 AH/1234 AD). He was the author of numerous books, including (Kitāb al-rawḍatayn fī akhbār al-dawlatayn al-Nūriyya wa-l-Ṣalāḥiyya), (al-Dhayl ʿalaʾl-rawḍatayn), and (Mokhtasar Tarikh Ibn Assaker). He taught and gave fatwa. He was a professor in the madrasas of Al-Adiliyya. Al-Rukniyya and Al-Ashrafiyya. He taught recitation of Quran in Dar Al Hadith Al Sharafiyyah, and in Dār al-Ḥadīth al-Ashrafiyah. Abu Shama refused to hold positions in State.
