Abstract

This study deals with the neighbours of the Two Holy Mosques during the Ottoman era (1520 - 1603 AD) as one of the elements of the Hijazi community who settled in Mecca and Medina.

The religious importance of the Hijaz and its distinct geographical location played a role in my choice of this subject, as well as the role of the neighbours in the development of the Hijaz community at that time. As for my choice for the time period after the entry of the Hijaz under Ottoman control, which is at the beginning of the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent (1494 - 1566 AD) to the reign of Sultan Muhammad III (1566 - 1603 AD), this period is one of the golden eras of the Ottoman Empire and its strongest sultans who took care of all other regions, especially the Hijaz. The study was presented to the category of neighbours who came to the Hijaz from different regions and multiple nationalities for many reasons, and resided next to the Two Holy Mosques and were therefore called neighbours. This study shows the large number of these arrivals to the Two Holy Mosques, so that they formed the largest group of the population if compared to the number of their original inhabitants. The neighbours have greatly influenced the Hijazi community, promoted the society in all cultural, scientific and economic aspects, and held many positions, large and small, whether religious, judicial, scientific or administrative.
