Abstract

The research explained the effect of "Adad" sound in the semantic direction at Taj al-Arus Dictionary, by Al- Zubaidi's; and how the "Adad" sound affected the words in which the sound exists. The phonetic semantics is derived from the word sounds and if one of the sounds changes, it will directly affect the meaning of the word. Scholars differ on whether the sounds have meaning or not, but the prevailing team is the one who supports that the sounds have meaning, while the other team has a weak argument. The present research consists of (an introduction, abstract, the effect of "Adad" sound on the words in which the sound exists, the achieved semantic of the silent alteration and the achieved semantic of the apophony). The researcher adopted the descriptive analytical approach to stand on the extent of the "Adad" sound effect on the words in which the sound exists. The current research concluded that the strong characteristics of the "Adad" sound have a significant effect on the words meaning; the hardship and sadness meanings are the most notable meanings in the "Adad" chapter, therefore, the meanings of sadness, hardship, breaking, and corruption are the most notable in comparing with other meanings, which indicates that the effect of "Adad" sound on the words in which the sound exists. The researcher recommends scholars to study the rest of the sounds in the Taj al-Arus Dictionary and clarify their impact on the semantic direction.
