Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the book covers of Khaled Tawfik's novels; detecting their styles, revealing their connotations, and uncovering their relations to the novels. Many creative writers have been interested in book covers. They aimed at selecting ones that are suitable for the narrative texts in their novels; they chose skilled artists to draw these paintings. The significance of the book cover lies in its ability in assisting the audience to understand the narrative text and going through its hidden worlds This is achieved through the paintings, visual icons, figurative signs, or the visual arts found on the book cover of the fictional work of art. Moreover, the book cover might reveal classical, romantic, or realistic paintings. These paintings are by distinguished artists in visual arts. Book covers, hence, have a significant influence on the reader Moreover, they convey the content of the text through signs and visual effects. Ahmed Khaled Tawfik's novels have covers with semiotics that convey a lot of connotations and signs which lead the reader towards the content of the narrative text. In addition, such covers have expressed accurately significant incidents taking place in the narrative scenes. This research aims at answering several questions: how is literature related to other types of arts? What is the relation between literature and visual arts, in particular? What is the relation between the book cover and the narrative texts? What is the role played by the book cover in revealing connotations related to the narration?
