Difficulties of Emotional Regulation and Its Relationship to Self-Compassion among University Students

Abstract

The aim of the current research is to identify the relationship between Emotion regulation difficulties and self-compassion among university students, and to reveal the extent of the difference in the degree of both Emotion regulation difficulties and self-compassion according to the sociocultural level of the families of the sample students. The research sample consisted of (413) female students of Faculty of Women, Ain Shams University. Their ages ranged between (21-22) years. To achieve the objectives of the research, the following scales were used: The scale of Emotion regulation difficulties among university students. (Prepared by the researcher), a scale of self-compassion among university students (prepared by the researcher), a family social and cultural level questionnaire. (Prepared by the researcher). The search results found: There is a statistically significant negative correlation at the level of significance (0.01) between the total score on the scale of Emotion regulation difficulties and the total score on the scale of self-compassion among university students with a correlation coefficient of (-0.738). The different degree of total Emotion regulation difficulties according to the different sociocultural level (low - medium - high) of the families of university students. The degree of sub-dimensions (not accepting emotional responses, difficulties engaging in goal-oriented behavior, lack of emotional clarity) of the scale of Emotion regulation difficulties according to the sociocultural level of the families of university students. The difference in the degree of self-compassion and its sub-dimensions according to the sociocultural level (low - medium - high) of the families of university students.
