Abstract

This research is entitled: "“The Syrians and Bread Industry-An Anthropological Study on the Sixth of October City".
". It aims to identify Syrian immigration to Egypt, monitoring as well, the manifestations of integration and exclusion between Syrians and Egyptians in the Sixth of October City. Methodologically, this thesis examines theoretical issues and concepts such as functional theory and migration theories (migration network - expulsion and attraction); besides concepts of social integration, system integration, social exclusion, and cultural adaptation. The study uses the anthropological method with its various tools. The study cases consist of (20) male Syrians, three female Syrians and five male Egyptians to identify the preferred places of residence for Syrian immigrants and how their stay with Egyptians in the same community affect their integration or exclusion in various activities of social, cultural and economic life.
The results conclude that “there is a cultural adaptation for the Syrian labor through the ability to use raw materials and locally made tools, in addition to adaptation to the nature of the climate in Egypt. This adaptation leads to the spread out of Syrian bakeries in the study population. It is indicated that there is a social and economic integration between the Syrians and each other, but an exclusion of some workers and Egyptian partnership by the owners of Syrian bakeries, preferring Sudanese workers. Also, some Syrians exclude themselves from several aspects of social, cultural and economic life. The study selected Syrian workers for the multiplicity of opportunities and work fields.
