The Egyptian society has witnessed a radical transformation over the past decades, from a state-directed economy where the state manages all resources and revenues according to a central plan set by the government, moving to a free-market economy system dominated by supply and demand mechanisms. Moreover, the private sector and civil society work as key players alongside the role of the state, which has also changed from being the main actor to being primarily a supervisor, regulator, and monitor. All industries and economic sectors have been affected by these transformations, with the textile and weaving sector being one of the most impacted.
This research aims to monitor the most important economic policies and decisions related to the textile and weaving industry and cotton cultivation in Egypt, during four phases: the establishment phase, the ascent and prosperity phase, the decline phase witnessed by the industry in the aftermath of the economic open-door policy and the economic reform period, and the current situation: the review phase and the 2019-2024 development plan The research relied on the historical approach to trace the historical stages through which the textile and weaving industry in Egypt has passed, and the most important economic policies during each stage, and their impact on the industry. The research also has used observation, various types of interviews, and focused discussion groups to monitor the current situation of the textile and weaving industry at Ghazal El-Mahalla Company.
