Abstract

The study discusses the life of Historian Abu al-Arab, the traditionist, faqih of al-Maliki school and holder of arts. He was born and raised in Kairouan in a family whose origin goes back to the Aghlabid state. His family is one of the families that cared about education as evident from his reliance on his father in his two books; he was one of his most important sources. In addition, his grandfather's military status had the greatest impact on the members of the family, which lasted for more than three hundred years.
Abu al-Arab excelled at an early age. He learned from a group of scholars and sheikhs whose sciences varied ranged from hadith, fiqh “jurisprudence”, readings, language, poetry, men’s science, genealogy and news. Hence, he took from their sciences and combined various sciences. Consequently, he was called "Holder of Sciences and Arts."
Abu Al-Arab authored many books such as Tabaqat Rijal Ifriqiya “Classes of African Men”, 'Ibad Ifriqiya “People of Ifriqiya”, Thiqat Al Mohadethin wa Do’afhm “Trustworthy and Weak Traditionists”, Al-Mihan “Adversities”, Fada'il Malik “Merits of Malik”, Kitab al-Tarikh fi Akhbar Al-Bilad Al-Ifriqiyyah “Book of History in the News of African Countries”, Manaqib Bani Tamim “Merits of Bani Tamim”, Manaqib Sahnun “Merits of Sahnun”, Tabaqat 'Ulama Ifriqiya wa Tunis “Classes of Scholars of Ifriqiya and Tunisia" He taught many students along with his children. His house was open to the students of science who came and gathered around him.
